Once pregnancy is desired we will help you optimise your health to ensure that when pregnancy does occur we can achieve a good outcome

What is prenatal care?
You and your baby can stay healthy while you are pregnant with prenatal care. Prenatal care lets your provider spot health problems early and is able to treat them if they are detected early. Prenatal testing is one of the most important aspects of prenatal care.

What does this mean?
Refers to a pregnancy during which a woman or her baby has an increased chance of developing health problems or being born prematurely (early).

  • Multiple gestations
Pregnancy with one or more fetus (twins, triplets etc).
  • Diabetics
Type 1, 2 or gestational diabetes can increase babies risk of birth defects, stillbirth and preterm birth.
  • Hypertension
Gestational Hypertension is diagnosed when a mom has high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Usually goes away after the delivery of baby.
  • Thyroid disease
Having low thyroid hormones or high thyroid hormones whether undiagnosed or uncontrolled can cause high-risk pregnancy. Visit us today to learn more.
  • Cardiac disease
During pregnancy, blood volume and heart rate increase as well as other changes. Preexisting conditions can be aggravated and new diseases can be introduced.
  • All the blood work done once you become pregnant
  • Non invasive prenatal testing for abnormalities

What is a booking visit or booking blood?
This is your first appointment after finding out you are pregnant. Ideally happens between 8 – 10 weeks of pregnancy. Infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B, Syphilis, HIV will be screened for because simple treatments can reduce your and your baby’s risks. You will also find out your blood count, blood group and Rhesus status.

What does non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) mean?
Pregnant women who have a baby with a heightened risk of developmental syndromes are recommended to take a NIPT blood test which is more accurate than a first pregnancy screening test.

First ultrasound is done to help date your pregnancy and Nuchal Scans

What is a booking ultrasound?
The first obstetric ultrasound ideally confirms pregnancy and accurately determines the gestational age of the fetus and the delivery date.

What is a Nuchal Scan?
This test measures the thickness of the nuchal fold, which is located at the back of an unborn baby’s neck. Measuring this thickness can help determine whether the baby is at risk for Down syndrome and/or other genetic problems

Why is blood taken again in the third trimester?
Routine blood tests at around 28 weeks of pregnancy are performed to determine your blood type, Rh factor, blood count and various disease screening which will likely determine how your baby will be delivered and if treatment is needed prior to delivery.

What is an Anomaly scan?
An ultrasound of the fetus performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy can detect certain congenital disorders and major anatomical abnormalities.

Why do an OGTT?
In your second trimester of pregnancy, glucose screenings are used to detect gestational diabetes. This involves drinking a sweet liquid and then having your blood drawn

From 26 weeks

What are serial ultrasounds and when is it performed?
Measures fetal growth every 2 weeks and is performed from 26 – 38 weeks of pregnancy. Used to identify periods of growth restrictions in pregnancy, therefore, determining birth weight

Discussion between mom and doctor on how the baby will be delivered occurs at 36 weeks.
